Laser Eye Surgery (LASIK & LASEK)
The eye works like a very elegant biological camera. Light from the outside world is focused by the combined effect of the cornea and the lens onto the retina, which then acts like the film in a camera.
In the ideal (perfectly-sighted) normal eye, light is brought in to sharp focus exactly on the retina. The three most common refractive errors are nearsighted vision, farsighted vision, and astigmatism. These imperfections can be surgically corrected with LASIK, Custom LASIK, and other vision correction procedures. Presbyopia, a refractive disorder that comes with age, can be treated with monovision through LASIK and intraocular lens implants, among other procedures.
Myopia (Nearsighted Vision)
Myopia occurs due to an irregularly shaped cornea. This causes light rays to focus in front of the retina, rather than directly on the retina. Nearsighted patients experience clear vision up close, but distant objects will be fuzzy.
Hyperopia (Farsighted Vision)
Hyperopia occurs due to an irregularly shaped cornea that causes light to focus behind the retina, rather than directly on the retina. If you are farsighted, you will have trouble seeing objects up close, but will see distant objects clearly.
Astigmatism
The most common of all eye disorders, astigmatism occurs when the eye is shaped more like a football than a basketball. This odd shape causes the light to focus on two points of the retina, rather than one.
Astigmatism is often accompanied by either nearsighted vision or farsighted vision. If this is the case, both refractive errors can be treated simultaneously. LASIK, PRK, and other refractive procedures correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism by reshaping the cornea so that the focal point is on the retina.
Presbyopia
Presbyopia is an eye condition that comes with age, hindering the up-close focusing ability of the eye. It generally starts affecting patients between the ages of forty and fifty. Presbyopia is currently being treated in a number of ways, including monovision and intraocular lens implants.
If your eyesight is impaired due to myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, or presbyopia, talk to an ophthalmologist to find out if you are a good LASIK candidate.
At our laser eye surgery department in New Vision Eye Clinic, we are committed to offering patients customized vision correction and personalized care. We firmly believe that strong doctor-patient communication leads to optimal surgical results. Therefore, our practice encourages patients to ask questions at every step of the refractive surgery process, from initial consultation to follow up appointments. We invite you to browse this website to get better acquainted with LASIK eye surgery and other treatments we offer.
New Vision Eye Clinic is proud to be a leader in medical education, eye research, and ophthalmic technology development. Over a decade ago, our practice was among the first in the country to offer laser vision correction to nearsighted patients through participation in clinical trials for PRK and LASIK. We now use Wavefront-Guided Laser Technology to help doctors measure the eye ever more precisely in order to make successful surgical corrections in a wider range of circumstances.
LASIK is a way for an eye doctor to permanently correct near-sightedness, far-sightedness and astigmatism by using a surgical laser. In the typical LASIK procedure, a flap is cut from the outer edge of the cornea. The flap is then lifted, laser correction is applied and the flap is replaced. LASIK is the most common laser eye surgery being performed today.
Due to certain conditions that may exist in the eye, LASIK is not a solution for everyone. A newer procedure, called LASEK, is an alternative technology that provides laser surgery results for people who may not be a candidate for LASIK. LASEK works without the need for cutting. Instead, a solution is applied to the exterior of the eye which allows the doctor to move the epithelium (outer layer) of the eye down, perform the laser correction and then slide the epithelium back into place.
